The lovers, later identified by their
surnames Zhou and Liang, were spotted on a street lying on top of each
other with their trousers down.
Citizens in Chongqing, in China’s
south-west, were too shocked to react as many passersby were also
apparently too embarrassed to even acknowledge what was going on.
After the tawdry snaps went viral online, local coppers launched an investigation and the randy pair were arrested.
Yet according to the Chongqing Public Security Bureau the pair were not to be held responsible for what happened.
An official said the men claimed they
were mentally ill and the act “was a result of them not being able to
control their actions”.
Homosexuality was decriminalised in China in 1997 and the government stopped classifying it as a “mental illness” in 2001.
However it is still considered widely taboo in the country.
A recent documentary showed a brave gay rights activist undergoing “correctional therapy” to “cure” him of his “disease”.
There are reportedly thousands of
clinics containing everything from quack doctors through to exorcists in
China, claiming that they can cure homosexuality and help gay men and
women return to “normal lives”.
This year has seen a spate of amorous couples romping in the most public of places.
In September a woman was arrested for having sex with her unconscious boyfriend in a supermarket car park.
This past summer the Magaluf crowd got randy on sun loungers, while back home a pair from Nuneatonbonked in a phone box.
